Do you have trouble focusing on work, or do you tend to procrastinate? Do you find yourself easily distracted? Do you like gamification? Then the Pomodoro technique will help you get more work done and more focused because you are dedicating yourself to a special work/break pattern where you get more things done.
What is the pomodoro technique?
The Pomodoro technique is a powerful time management tool invented by Francesco Cirillo. The main goal is to break down projects and tasks into short work sprints lasting for 25 minutes.
How it works
- First, you need to create and prioritize a list of tasks you want to complete.
- Second, start your timer for 25 minutes and work within that timeframe on the first single task.
- After 25 minutes, take a 5-minute break.
- Repeat the pattern until you had four Pomodoros.
- Take a more extended break, for instance, 20 to 30 minutes.
- Repeat that pattern for your defined workday.
If you find yourself struggling with the short timeframe, you can adjust the timer. For instance, try a 50 10 pattern.
What to do in the breaks?
Short breaks are good for moving and stretching. I stand up and do a few stretching exercises. Another one would be to move, go on a short walk, go outside, go make some coffee or tea. Do a short meditation or a short breathing exercise.
What timers to use?
You can use physical or digital timers. I prefer digital timers because you don’t need extra stuff for them. There are plenty of apps for iPhone, mac, and windows. I personally use the pomodoro.me app on my MacBook Pro because it is simple and free.
